Why physics will never become philosophy
It turns out that philosophy is actually
useful for the society.
Philosophy is an applied science
Philosophy has an important social function. It provides interface between aspects of life which are covered by natural sciences and those which are not covered by natural sciences.
There is more to life than we can see in our microscopes
Maybe it is easier to understand certain harsh aspects of it:
Philosophy provides political censorship for natural sciences.
(Not necessarily in a bad sense)
Physics does not have such a function.
Traditionally there was some element of this, too. Physics is often invoked, on TV etc, for “debunking” of UFO etc. However, as physics dives deeper and deeper into the world of speculations, this starts to work in the opposite direction. Now flying saucers come from extra dimensions etc... I don’t think society needs this type of “insight”.
